Dear Wings Players, Parents, Coaches and Families:
Wings is excited to announce the involvement of Dave Alberti, Steve Bellis and Ian Barker to assist the Club in its transition to naming a new Director of Coaching. Each of these individuals is a well-recognized leader in Wings and the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. Both individually and collectively, they bring immediate leadership and recognition to our program. They will work closely with the Wings Board and our Registrar Annette Johnson in leading our great program through this interim period.
Many of you already know Steve Bellis as he spent nine years as the Director of Coaching and Player Development for Wings. Since leaving that full-time position to become the Head Soccer Coach for the Womens’ team at the College of St. Catherine, Steve has remained close to the Wings program and has continued to coach at least one Wings team each season. In this transition phase, Steve will oversee Operations and Programming for the Club. He will run the Wings Soccer Camp this summer, will be involved in scheduling of the Rec and travel programs, and will assist our coaches and Wings staff in running the Wings Invitational. He also will have regular ‘office hours’ at the Wings office.
Dave Alberti has nineteen years experience as a youth soccer coach and has been with Wings for eleven years. Dave has chaired the Wings Coach and Player Development Committee since 2002. In addition to having been selected as the Section 2AA Coach of the Year, Dave also has spent eight years as the varsity girls’ high school coach for a number of local programs. In the interim period, Dave will oversee Wings Coach and Player Development within the Club. This will include overseeing travel tryouts next August, scheduling rec and travel teams, and serving as a liaison between Wings coaches and the Wings Board of Directors. Dave also will work on behalf of Wings with the Wayzata Soccer Club as the two clubs complete their first year of the jointly-created West Futbol Academy for some of our elite players at select age groups.
Ian Barker will consult with Wings on a number of issues during this transition phase. In particular, Ian will train our Rec coaches and assist with this summer’s recreational program. He also will work with other coaches to help train and advance their coaching techniques. Ian has been the Mens’ Varsity Soccer Coach at Macalester College since 2003 and also serves as the Assistant Head Coach of U.S. Youth Soccer for the Region II Olympic Development Program. Ian formerly served as the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. In the past, Ian also has assisted Wings in the creation of the Wings Recreational Soccer Program and the opening of the Wings Soccer Complex.
With the addition of Steve, Dave and Ian, the Board and I are very excited about the future of Wings Soccer. We are fielding more than 50 travel teams and will have an additional 450 children ages 4-8 in the Recreational Program. We fully expect this to be a great year!
Lastly, we wanted to alert you to several upcoming events that we encourage you to place on your calendars. First, the Tenth Annual Wings Invitational takes place May 16-18 and will feature nearly 200 teams from across the State. In connection with the Invitational, Wings has partnered with the Lupient family to collect used soccer cleats, uniforms and balls to donate to African children with an interest in soccer. This partnership with Lupient is a great opportunity to benefit those less fortunate than us and to spread goodwill through the game of soccer. In case you have not heard about this program, please see your manager who will have more details. Also, the Wings Banquet will take place on June 13. This is a great opportunity to support your Club and promises to be a wonderful evening.
Thank you again for your support of Wings Soccer. We are excited about the future of our Club! If you have questions, feel free to check the Wings website at www.wings-sc.org or call the Wings office at 763-535-4536.
Go Wings!
Sincerely,
Kevin Johnsrud
